Bryson Nimmer studied the final green Sunday as a gallery formed behind him.<\/p>\n
The surfaces at Heron Point by Pete Dye tried to trick him throughout the day. But here, with his ball in the bunker right of the 18th green and needing to hole the shot to force a playoff in the The Sea Pines Junior Heritage, there wasn’t much pressure to make the correct read.<\/p>\n
Nimmer chose an old cup as a target, landed his ball on the spot and watched it roll into the cup for an improbable birdie.<\/p>\n
The Bluffton resident then beat Hilton Head Island’s Andrew Orischak with a birdie on the first playoff hole, again the 18th.<\/p>\n
“Everybody in this tournament is good, so you know you’re working on the right things,” said Nimmer, who with Orischak finished at even-par 143. “You know your game is in the right spot. That’s all you can ask for.”<\/p>\n
Ana Paula Valdes completed the sweep for the Clemson-bound golfers. She won for the second consecutive year, defeating Mount Pleasant’s Annika Bovender with a par on the first playoff hole.<\/p>\n
Valdes finished at 5-over-par 148. She needed steely strokes to save par the final two times she played the 18th.<\/p>\n
“I already experienced this last year and the pressure and everything,” said Valdes, a junior at Heritage Academy who has committed to the Tigers. “I just try to stay calm and remember how it worked out last year.”<\/p>\n
Before the big bunker shot, Orischak talked with another player who said he had trouble even keeping his ball on the green from where Nimmer was in the trap.<\/p>\n
But Orischak, from his perch near the clubhouse, nonetheless predicted Nimmer’s heroics. Nimmer had similarly predicted Orischak would jar a 50-foot putt to join a three-man playoff at the Blade Junior Golf Classic in July.<\/p>\n
Neither won that event, but this time the competition was head-to-head.<\/p>\n
While Nimmer hit balls on the range in preparation for the playoff, his father told him he appeared too pumped up after the big birdie on 18. He counseled him to slow everything down and swing easy.<\/p>\n
Nimmer was left with a longer approach than Orischak in the playoff, 141 yards of carry over water with the wind in his face. He dropped it 4 feet from the flag. Orischak lipped his birdie try from about 18 feet.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think I missed a fairway the entire day, so I knew if my irons were as good as my driver, I’d birdie 18 in the playoff,” Nimmer said.<\/p>\n
Orischak fired a 2-under 72 to reach the playoff. He had missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the final hole, at the time not knowing the significance.<\/p>\n
He thought his final putt was going to drop and apply some pressure to Nimmer, who had also battled his putter at times during the final round.<\/p>\n
“Sometimes it doesn’t go in,” Orischak said.<\/p>\n
